Cochem on the Mosel
The first real tourists came at the beginning of the 19th century - full of romantic enthusiasm - to Cochem on the Moselle. Especially English painters, who drew and painted the beauties of the Mosel valley, were the pacemakers. The development of the city of Cochem into the first and leading tourist resort on the Moselle began in the 1930s and continues today. The many wine festivals spread over the year each year attract numerous visitors to the Moselle. The first historical mention of Cochem comes from a document of the Abbey Prüm of 866. The noble matron Hieldilda gives the monastery a number of estates, including a mansion "in villa cuchema". After many ups and downs in the Middle Ages, Cochem became a center of crafts and commerce during the 18th century. Fully laden with goods and travelers, a market ship drove to Koblenz every week. On the castle hill in the middle of the city majestically enthroned the imperial castle Cochem. It was built around 1000, destroyed in 1689 and rebuilt in 1874-77 by the Berlin Privy Councilor Louis Ravené. Every year, the castle attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world. In addition to the multilingual tours, numerous events are offered, such as the castle festival, knight's meals, concerts or the Castle Christmas Eve.
