Bernkastel-Kues
BERNKASTEL-KUES
The district of Bernkastel is located at the head of a wide Moselle loop, in the mouth of Tiefenbachtal, which leads down narrow and steep from the Hunsrück.
Disney in Real
The area has been inhabited for a very long time, in Kues in 1962 a village from the Neolithic (4000 - 3000 BC), the oldest known settlement on the Moselle ever. Surely also Treverer and Romans have lived here, but the first written mention falls into the 7th century. Merovingians and Luxembourgers were masters of the castle until 1017, when the archbishop of Trier, Poppo, demolished the fortress and incorporated it into its own territory. In 1277, today's Burg Landshut was built by Archbishop Heinrich von Vinstingen. In 1291 Bernkastel received the city rights of Emperor Rudolf von Habsburg.
Towering over the Landshut castle ruin, the city invites you on a journey through its rich history. Perhaps the most magnificent half-timbered ensemble in the region is the Bernkastel old town. The highlight is the medieval market square with the picturesque Michaelsbrunnen and the Renaissance town hall from 1608. Especially the "Spitzhäuschen" on the market square attracts a great deal of attention due to its extraordinary design. Since 1416 it seems to balance on a much too small pedestal.
